Embroidery for Mindfulness with Zendoodle Stitch!

We have something really exciting to share with you! Zendoodle Stitch Kits are new and exclusive to Sew and So and they are the next big thing to come from the adult colouring trend.

Zeena LOGOYou’d have to have been living under a rock for the last year to miss the adult colouring craze that is sweeping the nation. It is the latest trend to take adult and children alike by storm and it has hit people in a big way. Many books claim that colouring encourages mindfulness and that after a long day at work a bit of colouring can clear your mind and bring harmony to your life.

We have used that concept and taken it one step further applying it to embroidery; teaming up with talented illustrator, designer and screen printer Zeena Shah, we have created some stunning Zendoodle Stitch Kits for you to freehand embroider. Without the worry of counting stitches or having to follow a pattern you can doodle with the thread, however, you choose to and end up with a design that is truly unique.

Mindfulness is the main focus of this trend; Mark Waldman, a leading expert in communication and spirituality has explained that active meditation focuses on a simple task that requires a repetitive motion. It is this that helps people to concentrate and replace negative thoughts and create a sense of calm. A gentle activity such as colouring where you pick colours to create your picture and the repetitive motion of this doing this focuses the mind and blocks out intrusive thoughts.

Mind UK has said 1 in 4 people suffer from mental health problems. Whether it’s to help with depression or stress this trend has shown that people are actively seeking out ways in which to help them get a sense of calm in an increasingly busy world.

With the three Zendoodle kits, the Wise Owl, Beautiful Bird and Floral Heart, you could get the same sense of calm by colouring in the hand screen-printed image using thread. You can choose any stitches you want and there is no pattern to follow, so you can relax your mind and enjoy the process of creating a gorgeous piece of art.

Mindfulness is described as a mental state achieved by focusing one’s awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique. Perhaps this is why embroidery is used as a form of stress relief. The motion of  concentrating on a project, choosing colours, creating stitches and the repetitive motion of the stitching focuses you on the present and help to zone out intrusive thoughts.

My Body + Soul has a great section on their blog about the mental health benefits of embroidery. It really hits the nail on the head about the mindfulness of embroidery and the sense of calm it can bring to one’s life.

Mental Benefits

Dr Marlies Alvarenga, director of the Monash Clinical Psychology Centre at Monash University, says embroidery is known as logic relaxation. Forming and following patterns require a certain logic to the practice.Zendoodle heart detail

“It makes beautiful sense to do this,” Alvarenga says. “You could sit on the train going to work and look out the window or you could do cross-stitch, engaging the brain in being able to develop and follow patterns, so there is a logic involved. It’s a self-induced state of focusing.”

It also stimulates the brain’s right hemisphere, which is associated with creativity.

“This also fits into the concept of mindfulness, because doing embroidery makes you very present. It has also been shown to lower blood pressure, and as people achieve small successes – getting a difficult stitch right and creating something beautiful – their perceived level of confidence rises. Plus, at the end of the day, you end up with a product for your effort and your own creation.”

We have now three new kits to add to our Zendoodle collection!

Crafty Cat Flower Tree Frolicking Reindeer

We have the Crafty Cat, a Flower Tree and a Frolicking Reindeer.  These folk-inspired designs are perfect for free-form embroidery. There is no worry about following a pattern and getting the exact correct colours. All you have to do is stitch and you will end up with a piece of embroidery that is unique to you. These kits sold out really quickly last time, and it is really no surprise because they are just so fab! So get them while you can!
