Trends are everywhere. They drive what we see in adverts, in magazines, in supermarkets, on the high street. There’s no escaping them, whether you live by them or feel completely unaffected. From trending paint colours to furniture, from designs of cakes to what we can easily find to inspire our creativity, from the shoes we wear to the hair colours we see amongst our friends and co-workers.
The very nature of a trend is that they evolve and change, however they do so at different paces – some are popular only for a season, others go on for years – and we can rarely tell which is going to be which. Keeps us on our toes at least!
A trend we are loving at the moment is metallic, part of the ongoing trend for luxury which has delighted us for a few years now. Glamour, excitement, expense, opulence. But they need to be used sparingly – unless the complete full-on glitz is what you are after of course!
Here are a few things getting us seeing glitz and glamour at the moment.
1 Sparkly Cake Pops
These beautiful sparkly cake pops (photos by Bella Rose Photography) look deceptively easy to make. Which leads me on to my next item, and may help me re-create these!
2 The Gilded Cake
Unique in the market, The Gilded Cake shows readers how to create a wealth of different metallic effects on cakes using a wide variety of techniques. From gold leaf to edible paint, food-grade sprays, edible glitters, lustre dusts, edible sequins and more.
3 Handmade Jewellery
The organic tactile feel of this jewellery from Silver & Stone (Sue Yeoman and Michael Jefferies) would make the most amazing focal point to an outfit. I would be tempted to wear black or grey and let these beauties really shine.
4 Winter Ornaments Cross Stitch Chart
A set of three wintery mini 3-inch hoop ornaments, stunning metallic thread is used to create a silhouette effect on the perfect shade of evenweave fabric, stitch the Stag, pouncing Fox and Fir tree. These designs are a great introduction to stitching with metallic thread with tutorial included.
5 DMC Mouline Etoile Stranded Cotton
Mouliné Étoile Stranded Cotton – DMC’s new range of premium embroidery thread with added sparkle. The sparkling new thread is soft, smooth and just as easy to stitch with as DMC’s flagship Mouline, but will add an elegant shimmer to all of your stitching! Available in 35 beautiful colours, Etoile is sure to make you shiny and very happy.
6 Brass Bumble Bee Door Knocker
A gorgeous way to make an entrance. And bees are so on trend in other ways too, being vital for our food production and struggling to exist. Be an eco-warrior and show you care! From Cox & Cox.
7 Celebrity Fashion
Even Lady Gaga gets in on the metallic act at the recent world premiere of her new film, A Star is Born, also starring (and directed by) Bradley Cooper. Stepping out in a gold embossed bodice and gold skirting, this Alexander McQueen gown really provided Gaga with an Elizabethan inspired flouncy glamour!
