So… what is upcycling?
“Upcycling” is essentially taking anything that’s old, worn or unwanted and revamping it to create something fresh, new and, most importantly, desirable! Sometimes this completely changes the purpose of the item, for example transforming an old jumper into a hot water bottle cover.
Make It and Mend It, by Clare Flynn, Hilary Bruffell, Anne Caborn and Clare O’Brien, features loads of ideas for a ‘handmade’ lifestyle, from baking, sewing and knitting to upcycling and basic household repairs. Inside, you’ll find projects varying from sewing cushions and creating handmade cards to building a barbecue and mending clothes.
Check out our free projects for upcycling chairs, which includes ideas for painting, re-upholstering and decoupage. Decoupage is a common and inexpensive way to breathe life into old furniture. You can use any lightweight paper or fabric and you can even buy special decoupage papers. There are great ideas to revamp your cupboard doors too! Or, as a quirky idea for an old door, why not make a coffee table!
Whether it’s clothing or furniture, there are hundreds of techniques to get your old or outdated items looking good again! Be inspired to transform anything – from decoupaging a kitchen cupboard door to upcycling some vintage plates into a cake stand!
