How’s this for a great idea this Christmas? Helen Philipps shows you how to make stitched linen gift bags in such a simple way… a pretty way to create your own DIY gift wrap this Christmas.
These sweet little drawstring bags would be perfect to hold precious gifts, perhaps jewellery or other sparkly trinkets. You could also use them in the kitchen all year long to store little cookie cutters or fill them with star anise spice for special recipes.
For each bag you will need
• Two pieces of 28-count linen in the colour and size you want your bag, plus seam allowances
• Fabric strip for binding
• Ribbon for tying up your bag
• DMC stranded cotton (floss) to stitch the motif
• Tapestry needle size 24–26
Sewing the bag
1 Place the two pieces of white linen together and sew up one side seam (a).
2 Withdraw five threads from the linen 4cm (1½in) down from the top, to form a row for the ribbon (b).
3 Sew the binding along the top edge, placing the right side of the binding together with the right side of the bag (c).
4 Stitch your motif on to the front of the bag using the charts below, or a motif of your choice. Stitch over two threads of linen with two strands of stranded cotton.
5 Turn the binding over to the inside of the bag and slipstitch in place (d). Now fold the bag wrong sides together and sew round the second side of the bag and along the bottom (e).
6 Turn the bag right way out and press. Thread the ribbon through the ribbon row, pull it up and tie in a bow (f ).
