Signature Bags is a book born out of the frustration of not being able to find the ideal bag in a shop. Michelle Colightly has included 12 bags that are both practical and stylish you can sew at home.
If, like Michelle, you struggle to find a bag that is perfect for you and end up using an old faithful bag that is falling apart then Signature Bags is the book for you. Michelle takes current fashion trends and transforms them into something the average sewer can make. Each pattern begins with a level of difficulty, but don’t let that deter you from making the bag you want. The instructions on the book are incredibly thorough and there are lots of useful tips along the way to guide you. It gives advice on which fabric to use, hardware and an extremely handy page on terms. This means that even if you are a relative beginner you can achieve all the patterns in the book.
Let’s take a look inside the book shall we?
From top left: There is a boutique day purse which has a changeable cover to match every outfit, a serendipity purse which is both casual and dressy simultaneously and a lunch date clutch which has an attachable strap. There is also a super stylish casual backpack which repurposes denim jeans to create the bottom and in the bottom right is a bag for a woman who want’s to stand out. With multi-coloured ruffles and oversized feature buttons all eyes will be on you when you wear this bag.
The bags you can make from this book are really lovely and most incorporate metal hardware to give a more professional look. There is something for every occasion and all the bags can be styled to your own taste with a simple fabric choice.
For each of the patterns there is also a section on skills to review. This is a list of skills you will need to complete the pattern. What is really great is that they tell you what page of the book that skill is on, so if you do need some help it is easy to find. This makes all the patterns really accessible.
