Valeri Valeriano and Christina Ong co-own and run Queen of Hearts Couture Cakes, and are well-known for creating impressive buttercream cake designs. Their first book, The Contemporary Buttercream Bible, features 50 innovative techniques and over 40 stunning cake designs to create at home! We asked Valeri and Christina what they love about working with buttercream and all about their new book, The Contemporary Buttercream Bible…
What was the first cake that you made together?
“We don’t really work on the same cake, although we both decide and agree on all of the designs that we make. The first one that we ever made together was the 6ft-tall grand cake display for the Cake International Show in Birmingham in 2013.”
What do you love about working with buttercream?
“We love that buttercream is a delicate medium and can be challenging to work with. It makes us squeeze our brains even harder to innovate more techniques and designs. It’s also very cost effective, and you can make a batch of buttercream in less than 5 minutes – no kneading required!”
Do you have a favourite buttercream technique?
“Our favourite, apart from our Stained Glass art technique is our very own Buttercream Imprinting technique. There’s so much you can do with the technique and it creates such a lovely effect!”
Which is the best buttercream technique to start with?
“We believe the flower piping technique is best, as it gives a good understanding of how to hold a piping bag and how much pressure to apply when piping.”
What are you both working on at the moment?
“We’ve been travelling a lot for classes abroad and we’re currently planning book launch events in the UK and abroad for The Contemporary Buttercream Bible. Over the next few months, we’ll be sorting out our 2015 calendar, and we have few designs and techniques that we can’t wait to try out and perfect!”
