If you are new to crochet it might be worth experimenting with t shirt yarn. It is chunky and, therefore, works up very quickly – giving you great results fast.
T shirt yarn is particularly good if you are a novice crocheter because you can very clearly see your stitches in this big, chunky yarn which makes harder to make mistakes. We love it because it comes in a huge variation of colours including variegated varieties and lends itself to big projects such as rugs, baskets and bags. Big, chunky yarn needs a big chunky hook so you’ll need to pick up a crochet hook that suits the particular yarn you have – the label will always tell you which hook to use.
There are some fantastic projects around if you’re wondering what to make with t shirt yarn and we’ve selected a few of our favourites.
First up is this great circular rug made using two different colours of t shirt yarn. The free pattern for this rug is available on the blog myworldofwool.com here, so why not have a look. We love the great colours they’ve used which makes the rug bang up to date.
We also adore this very cute crocheted vase – perfect for keeping your crochet hooks safe. There is a photo tutorial for the vase on the lady crochet blog here.
Another great idea is this fabulous, squishy stool cover on the blog Micah Makes. You can find the whole tutorial on her blog – she makes her own t shirt yarn but it will work equally as well with Hoooked Zpagetti or another brand.
If you don’t want to jump right in with a large scale project, how about tackling a smaller make such as these very cool little t shirt yarn bangles by Lilblue which can be found on their blog here with full instructions.
Or how about this great shoulder bag which is made using a very on trend vivid pink shade of Hoooked Zpagetti – perfect for the change of season! You can find a link to download the free pattern for this and four other t shirt yarn bag patterns here, enjoy!
If you make anything with t shirt yarn, we’d love to see it – so make sure you share it with us on our Facebook page!
