This chunky rug feels wonderful under your feet and the best part is it’s made from recycled sheets! It’s the perfect rug to place by your bed and step onto every morning. Once you’ve cut old sheets into a continuous strip, the knitting part is simple and it knits up fast. This knitted rug pattern requires giant needles and is a perfect beginner knitting project.
- Assorted colour sheets: brown, turquoise, white, green (if you don’t want to recycle sheets you can use chunky wool as long as it’s suitable for the size needles you are using, such as this Rowan yarn. You can vary the colours as you choose by switching yarn).
- 12 mm knitting needles
Finished Size: 25″ × 38″ (63cm × 96cm)
1. Spread a sheet flat on a large table or the floor. With scissors, remove all the hems so you’re left with a single thickness of fabric. Begin cutting the sheet into 1″ (3cm) strips. To make a continuous strip, follow the diagram below and stop your cuts 1½” (4cm) from the edge. Begin each new cut from the outside edge.
2. Once you’re finished cutting, begin rolling your new fabric yarn into a ball. The larger turning sections will create bulk and add interest to your work. Repeat the process with the remaining sheets until you have several balls of different colours ready to knit.
