New year, new craft? If you’d like to learn a new craft, how about patchwork and quilting? If you love fabric and enjoy playing with pattern and colour, this could be the craft for you!
Learning how to quilt isn’t as difficult as it sounds — don’t be put off patchwork and quilting because you think you have to jump right in with a king sized bed quilt. Patchwork is perfect for small projects such as a pin cushion or needle case — so you can start small and move on to bigger projects as your skills grow.
Patchwork is all about piecing together different scraps of fabric to make an item, whether it’s a cushion, wall hanging, bag or indeed, a quilt. There are some basic skills to learn which will help you on your patchwork journey such as the correct way to cut fabric, what seam allowance to leave and how to press your projects. And there are come basic patchwork techniques including English Paper Piecing, block piecing and chain piecing. Once you’ve explored these techniques you will be ready to try some simple piecing such as half square triangles, which form the basis of hundreds of quilt top designs.
Once you have tackled the piecing and patchwork you can start to think about quilting — this is the process of creating the three parts of the quilt: the quilt top; the wadding and the backing — and joining them together by quilting by hand or machine.
