Designed by Carol Thornton, these free nautical cross stitch motifs look great on two simple projects. The sailing boat design works well as a patch on a drawstring cosmetics bag, perfect for travelling, while the nautical flags look cute adorning a face cloth.
You Will Need:
- 18 x 15cm (7 x 6in) white 14-count Aida
- Tapestry needle size 24
- DMC stranded cotton as listed in the chart key
- Ready-made drawstring bag
- 4.5 x 33cm (13/4 x 13in) white 14-count Aida strip
- 30.5cm (12in) square white face cloth
- White sewing thread
Stitch the designs onto the Aida using two strands of stranded cotton for cross stitch and one strand for backstitch. If preferred you can omit the white cross stitch background.
For the bag: Trim the Aida to 15.2 x 12.7cm (6 x 5in). Turn under 1.3cm (1/2in) hems all around and press. Position the design on the bag and slipstitch in place.
For the face cloth: Turn under the raw edges of the strip by 1.3cm (1/2in) pin in place and stitch round the edges. Remove the pins when finished.
