Flickering Star Patchwork Pillow Pattern

This beautiful flickering star patchwork pillow pattern by Tacha Bruecher uses modern fabrics to bring a classic quilt block bang up to date. The contrasting colours from bright to light give the flickering illusion to this fabulous patchwork project.

Flickering Star Pillow Pattern

For This Patchwork Pillow Pattern You Will Need:

Fabric for cushion front:

  • One piece 39cm x 58cm (15 5/8in x 23¼in) (solid white)
  • One piece 14cm x 14cm (5 5/8in x 5 5/8in) (A)
  • One piece 43cm x 15cm (17¼in x 6in) (B)
  • One piece 53cm x 17cm (21¼in x 6 7/8in) (C)
  • One piece 53cm x 17cm (21¼in x 6 7/8in) (D)
  • One piece 15cm x 30cm (6in x 12in) (E)

Fabric for cushion lining:

  • One piece 60cm x 60cm (24in x 24in)
  • Co-ordinating sewing thread
  • Wadding (batting)

Method:

1. Cut your fabrics as follows:
From solid white fabric:
Two  5cm (6in) squares
Four 9cm (3½in) squares
Eight 7.5cm (3in) squares
Eight rectangles 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in)
From fabric A:
One 14cm (5½in) square
From fabric B:
Two 15cm (6in) squares
From fabric C:
Four  7.5cm (3in) squares
Four rectangles 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in)
From fabric D:
Four  9cm (3½in) squares
Eight  7.5cm (3in) squares
From fabric E:
Eight  7.5cm (3in) squares

2. Make four flying geese units using eight fabric E 7.5cm (3in) squares and four of the white 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in) rectangles. Trim to 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in). Sew two units to the top and bottom of the fabric A 14cm (5½in) square. Sew a fabric C 7.5cm (3in) square to opposite sides of the remaining fabric E flying geese. Sew to the sides of the fabric A square.

3. Make four flying geese units using eight fabric D 7.5cm (3in) squares and four of the white 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in) rectangles. Trim to 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in). Sew a white 7.5cm (3in) square to opposite side of each of the flying geese.

4. Make eight HSTs (half square triangles) using four fabric D 9cm (3½in) squares and four white 9cm (3½in) squares. Trim to 7.5cm (3in) square. Sew to opposite sides of the fabric C 7.5cm x 14cm (3in x 5½in) rectangles. Sew each of these units to the bottom of each of the fabric D flying geese units.

5. Sew two of the fabric D/C units to the top and bottom of the fabric A square.

6. Make four HSTs using two fabric B 15cm (6in) squares and two white 15cm (6in) squares. Trim to 14cm (5½in) square. Sew to opposite sides of two of the fabric D/C units. Sew to the sides of the fabric A square.

7. Layer the pillow top, wadding and lining fabric and tack (baste). Quilt as desired.

8. Finish the pillow using a backing of your choice. Bind the edges for a neat finish.
