Most of us are familiar with accreditation for various foods but did you know that textiles can also be accredited for quality? The OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an industry standard for certifying yarn and other textiles to assess how suitable they are for sensitive skin, including yarn used for baby knits.
We are happy to announce that Patons Baby Smiles range – one of the yarns suitable for baby knits in our store – has been accredited with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100. This is an independent testing and certification system for textile raw materials, intermediate and end products at all stages of production, including yarn.
The Patons Baby Smiles range can be found in our store here. You can choose from 4 ply, DK, aran and 2 ply yarn in a wide range of colours. The Baby Smiles Fairytale 4 ply is perfect for this pattern for baby mittens and hat.
There are lots of other ideas and knitting patterns on our blog, or why not download this Free Baby Knitting Patterns ebook which includes a range of projects including mittens, hat and the lovely cardigan pictured below.
OEKO-TEX® testing for harmful substances focuses on the actual use of the textile. The more intensive the skin contact of a product, the stricter the human ecological requirements to be met. There are four product classes and product class 1 deals with textile items for babies and toddlers up to three years.
The Patons Baby Smiles range of yarns is currently the only one to be certified with the OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, class 1. This means they are free from substances that are considered hazardous to health or that can cause allergies.
The testing includes:
- illegal substances
- legally regulated substances
- known harmful (but not legally regulated) chemicals
- as well as parameters for health care
